The Soul of John Black

June 12th, 2007 . by Roxor

John Black

JB’s musical history boasts an impressive resume. He’s written songs for Miles Davis and played percussion in the Davis group. Bigham played guitar and keyboard for the pioneering rock-funk-ska band Fishbone for eight years, contributing songs, guitars, keyboards, background vocals and production expertise to the albums The Reality Of My Surroundings, Give A Monkey A Brain and Chim Chim’s Bad Ass Revenge.

Later on, he toured as a side man and played on sessions with artists as varied as Eminem, Dr. Dré, Rosey, Joi, Nikka Costa, Bruce Hornsby and Everlast.

Bigham’s latest solo project The Good Girl Blues is a testament to the forceful beauty of music that’s been stripped down to its essence – guitar, voice and naked human emotion delivered in sparse performances that grabs your attention with its raw and spontaneous power.

In The Palace Of The King

May 3rd, 2007 . by Roxor

John Mayall

John Mayall, the “Godfather of British Blues”, returns with the Bluesbreakers for his latest studio album “In The Palace of The King”.

This new album is John’s tribute to one of his blues heroes, the late, great Freddie King. King was a blues guitar pioneer from the mid-50’s through to his tragically early death in the mid-70’s and he influenced everyone from Peter Green to Dave Edmunds to Stevie Ray Vaughan and probably most of all Eric Clapton, who produced and played on King’s final album.

“In The Palace of The King” features John Mayall’s take on his personal selection of Freddie King favorites and is a fabulous combination of two true blues legends.

Big Head Todd Sound Archive and Podcast

April 30th, 2007 . by Roxor

Big Head ToddI’ve downloaded all of the MP3’s here ( bottom of the page, the Free Music Archive ) but now the fantastic Big Head Todd is posting live MP3’s as podcasts.

They’ve moved the Free music archive that was located on the mp3s page but in an effort to simplify the website and make it less confusing they’ve added it to this new page.

So now you can still download the great free alternative tracks and tracks you can’t anywhere else ( I like Family Situation and Halo  ) but you can also download all of this great live music or even subscribe to the podcast.

April 24th, 2007 . by Roxor

Head on over to I Guess I’m Floating to download a nice Sam Cooke cover by Britt Daniel of Spoon fame.

Britt stays faithful to Cooke’s original, which some consider to be the founding song of the Soul music movement.

Paul Rodgers - Live In Glasgow

April 17th, 2007 . by Roxor

Paul Rodgers

Live In Glasgow, recorded in October of 2006 on the last date of his Sold Out UK tour (which included a date at London’s prestigious Royal Albert Hall),  is stunning proof that Rodgers’ voice sounds as good as ever - and that is saying something.

This CD includes brand new songs “Warboys (A Prayer for Peace)” and “Far Distant Shore,”  as well as songs he has not performed in 35 years, and many of his hits, including “All Right Now,” “Feel Like Making Love” and “Can’t Get Enough.” Soulful, bluesy, swaggering, he belts out his songs, and also plays piano and guitar.

This was the song that first opened my eyes to the potential of CCMixter music - This slow, downtempo track is as interesting as anything that you are going to hear anywhere.

StarLight flies is a 90’s style grunge influenced rock track with interesting low spoken vocals that builds into an expansive chorus.

Based on the original track “Scared Of My Own Blood”, Blood Ties by Cezary Ostrowski highlights the abiltiy for a remix to be transformed into something completely new.

And now for something completely different… This is the type of track that you are never gonna hear on traditional radio, but that if you did hear might just effect you.

I’m a Sucker for a Girl in Uniform

March 5th, 2007 . by Roxor

The ChurchillsThe Churchills have released there newest video online - I’m a Sucker for a Girl in Uniform juxtaposes sugary sweet power pop sounds with vile imagary and takes a political stand all at once.

The Churchills have had cred in my book ever since I saw Meadow Soprano wearing a Churchills t-shirt.

If they are new to you: The band formed in New York City in 2000 when founding members Ron Haney and Bart Schoudel got one of their songs into the hands of Michael J. Fox who put them on three episodes of his show “Spin City.” The band appeared playing their song “Everybody Gets What They Deserve” live on the street in the show. Since then they have been featured widely on radio and video outlets around the country and syndicated on NPR around the world. Other members of the band include Scott Haskitt on drums and Jed Higgerson on guitar.

in addition to the video, you can listen to Sometimes Your Best Isn’t Good Enough here.
